Forest Cafe, Kalamunda

Feb 13

SONY DSCMy mum and I during the week had decided to plan a little shopping day out on Saturday. We were going to go to midland for a few things and then go into Kalamunda and have a little walk around. I have to admit that every time I go to Kalamunda I am surprised by how serene it is. It really is the sort of place that is locked in a time warp (in a nice way of course).

When we got to Kalamunda it was nearly lunchtime, so after a little bit of walking around we decided to find somewhere to have lunch. There were a few options but we weren’t sure if they were any good, so I asked my friend Chantal for reccomendations and she suggested a place called forest cafe which is on Haynes street. It was quite easy to spot so we decided to give it a go. Read more →

Merrywell, Crown Casino

Feb 06

A turned to me on a Monday after I got home from work and said to me “How about I pick you up after work take you out for a surprise dinner on Wednesday night?” I love supposes and thought that this was a fantastic idea!

So I was picked up by A and we headed to this mystery location. I was making guesses along the way depending on what street we were on at the time. When I saw A get off the freeway at the Belmont park on ramp to head towards crown casino I knew exactly where we were headed to. The Merrywell would be an interesting place to try as its part of massive redevelopment and re branding that the Burswood has recently gone under. Read more →

KL Food, Spencer Village

Feb 03

SONY DSCI had been back from my holiday to Singapore/Malaysia for about 7 days and I started to miss Singapore. I was mainly missing the availability of fresh and delicious food around every corner. It was at that moment I decided that I needed some good hawker food in my life and I knew just the place to go and get it. Read more →

Munchies sushi, Mt lawley

Jan 30

SONY DSCA found a deal online the other day that she surprised me with. The deal was for $50 dollars worth of sushi from a place called munchies sushi. I hadn’t heard of munchies sushi before so i went on google to do a little bit of research. It turns out that munchies sushi hadn’t been opened very long. I decided to go into this meal knowing very little about the restaurant to surprise myself. Read more →

California Pizza Kitchen

Jan 22

SONY DSCWhen i was planning my most recent trip to Malaysia there was one place that A mentioned that i have to go to. This place was ‘California Pizza Kitchen’, when she had been on a holiday to south east asia a few years ago she went to this particular chain of restaurants 3 times in 2 weeks. A was raving about how great their chicken salad was. After I received this glowing recommendation I went onto the California Pizza Kitchen website to see a little bit about their history. It turns out that the first location opened in California (unsurprisingly) in 1985 and since then has expanded to over 250 locations around the world. Read more →

Eleven restaurant, Melaka

Jan 13

SONY DSCI was looking for somewhere to go for dinner near where i was staying in Melaka, to be honest as much as i was looking for somewhere to go for dinner I was also enjoying walking around the streets of Melaka and taking photos in the beautiful afternoon light like the one above. I remember the thought of “I can’t believe i am in Malaysia” kept running through my head as i walked around. Read more →

Shu teppan, Singapore

Jan 03

My first night in Singapore we decided to hit the ground running and head out at night for shopping and some delicious food. This was a Friday night and we jumped on the incredibly efficient MRT system and after about 10 minutes we were in the middle of bustling orchard rd. This was an assault on my senses, everywhere I looked there were either neon signs, people shopping or people eating. We were pretty hungry at this stage so we headed into one of the malls to grab something for dinner. One thing about Singapore is that they love to eat, so most of the places that we wanted to go there were considerable queues to get in. The queues at Shu teppan didn’t look too bad so we decided to give it a go. Read more →

Ira Nasi Biryani, Melaka

Dec 26

I was due to make my way to Johor Bahru on the coach from Melaka, I enjoyed my time in Melaka but I was looking forward to seeing what differences Johor Bahru has compared to Melaka. My coach was due to leave at 1:30 so i had planned to get there a little bit early and grab something to eat.

This is where Malaysia is quite different to Australia, when I think of the Perth train station and the food and beverage options there is maybe somewhere to get a coffee and then a bakery serving pies and sausage rolls that have been sitting around all day. The food selections at Melaka sentral are completely different to Perth! There is such a wide range of food avaliable, from chinese stir fries to chinese breads and buns to indian curries. I was so surprised that there was just an enormous range of food available.

I walked around for a little bit until I saw a sign directing me out of the air-conditioned comfort of the terminal and to a food hall, after walking down a hallway I was greeted with a number of stalls all selling yummy stuff and people from the wet market across the road eating there. I went up and asked one of the workers what they like from here and they smiled and said “roti prata very good” and pointed in the direction of a particular roti prata stall.

While I was looking over the menu I enjoyed a very tasty lime juice which also cooled me down instantly.

I placed my order and not long after I was greeted with the smell of buttery roti prata. I have to admit that I did make a rookie mistake of reaching in to tear off a piece of this roti and i burnt my fingers slightly as it must have come off the hotplate seconds earlier. This caused the workers at the next table to laugh at me and hand me some tissues. After leaving it to cool down enough that i tore off a piece, dipped it in the vegetable curry and took a bite. It was amazing, flaky and buttery with a nice level of spice from the curry. Absolutely fantastic and I know its something that i will look back on fondly when I am in Australia.

I was feeling extremely happy after this meal and I feel that time and time again when you are travelling if you search a little bit off the beaten path of the lonely planet guides you can find some real gems. This is just another great meal that confirms that point.

Ippudo SG, Singapore

Dec 15

On my second last day in singapore I spent the day wandering along orchard road and doing some shopping. My day started with breakfast at KFC as i saw the other day that they had congee on the menu and i decided to give it a try. To be honest it was pretty disappointing, when you get a really good bowl of congee it should feel really nourishing and should warm you up. This particular congee was thick and incredibly bland. The Precinct, Victoria Park
